Joe Biden says he loves ObamaCare. When the legislation was signed in 2010, Biden was caught on a live microphone telling President Obama, “This is a big f***ing deal!”
In his campaign ads he’s telling the story of his family’s healthcare and remembering fondly that he had good healthcare insurance. We watch old videos of his children while Joe tells us he’s especially grateful that he had insurance when his son Beau developed cancer. He was comforted to know they were insured. Then he tells us “ObamaCare is personal to me.”
These words and images suggest ObamaCare has provided the healthcare insurance they needed for all these years. But Joe Biden has been in Congress or the White House for the last 47 years. His family has been covered by Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHB) insurance all those years – not ObamaCare!
What Biden doesn’t love about ObamaCare is the taxes, but don’t expect to hear that in his ads. Chris Jacobs, writing in The Wall Street Journal, tells us Joe and his wife Jill have managed to avoid the ObamaCare taxes for years. Jacobs says in 2017 and 2018, the Bidens characterized large amounts of book and speaking income as corporate profits rather than taxable wages, allowing them to circumvent Medicare and ObamaCare payroll taxes, of 2.9% and 0.9% respectively, on that income. Once again, they have used this tactic to avoid the same taxes on their 2019 returns, which were just released before the first debate.
The Bidens paid federal income taxes on all their earnings. But they avoided payroll taxes on the portion of income characterized as corporate profits – $228,703 in 2019, and a total of more than $13.5 million since Biden left office in 2017. It seems to be very lucrative to be a former vice-president.
Altogether, the Bidens have avoided paying more than $513,000 in payroll taxes that ObamaCare requires. He’s quick to confront President Trump about avoiding taxes, but he’s done a good job of that himself.
Biden will continue to push the myth that he’s against socialized medicine like Bernie Sanders and his Medicare for All proposal. But he allowed Bernie’s people to sit on his platform task force to strategize their plans for healthcare reform, the Green New Deal, and free college tuition. Among their proposals is free healthcare for all illegal aliens.
He tells us he wants to “improve ObamaCare”, but his idea of improvements is bringing back the Individual Mandate. That mandate forces all Americans to purchase healthcare insurance or pay a tax penalty, a penalty Joe will never have to pay. He also wants to add a “Public Option”, which guarantees we will all lose our private health insurance as soon as the public option underprices the competition until they go out of business. It will usher in the government takeover of healthcare Bernie Sanders wants; just a little slower.
Joe Biden’s mantra seems to be “ObamaCare for thee, but not for me.”
